Overview (Brunch Oxfordshire at CRAFT Burger Oxford)
I have visited CRAFT Burger before, not long after they opened for the first time and was really impressed by their burgers. I just don’t go out and eat burgers as much as I’d like too, probably because pizza is my first choice when eating out in Oxford. That being said, I recently discovered CRAFT Burger started a new brunch menu and I couldn’t resist visiting to see how it compared to the many good breakfast and brunch offerings in Oxford. Ultimately I wanted to see if this could be considered the best Brunch in Oxford and, dare I say it, Oxfordshire.
CRAFT Burger does in the first instance strike you as a typical large restaurant chain. Personally I think this is because you can see that a lot of thought, effort and money has been put into their quirky urban theme showing lots of brickwork, untreated old wood and exposed pipework. It’s the kind of place you would expect markets itself to young professionals and students treating themselves to a nice meal.
I was wrong though. CRAFT Burger are an independent restaurant which I was really pleased to hear as I always prefer independent businesses when eating or drinking out. I loved the beer bottle chandelier which can be seen just on the left as you walk in before the bar. I was told that the owners of the restaurant drank all those beers a few nights before the restaurant had officially opened which made me smile. One of the reasons why I favour independent businesses is because I believe they started their business with the passion to serve its real purpose, in this case to make amazing food and a decent atmosphere to eat and drink in. They also tend to have certain characteristics and stories such as the one about the ‘beer chandelier’ which you often don’t get at chain restaurants.
Anyway lets get to the brunch. So we ordered two large lattes and to eat, the ‘All American’ and ‘Bacon and Pancakes’.
Seriously, it looked amazing when it arrived. My jaw dropped and I couldn’t believe we had not found out about the brunch here sooner. The food arrived quickly, hot and was presented really well. The pancakes were light and fluffy, the bacon crispy and I have to say I haven’t had scrambled eggs as nice as theirs before. They were soft, creamy and well seasoned. Looking through these pictures again as I type up this post is making me want to go back again.
I’d like to compare CRAFT Burger to a couple of other places I’ve eaten at for breakfast before in Oxford. If you like places like The George Street Social, then you’ll love it here because they offer a very similar vibe and great, quality food too.
I want to make a point for all of you that like the famous ‘Breakfast Club’ which have opened their first branch outside of London in our newest shopping centre, The Westgate Centre. I visited The Breakfast Club a couple of months ago and enjoyed it but was slightly let down by how expensive it was. When we pretty much ordered the same as what you see here, the bill came to around £40 in total for two people and the service just wasn’t that great. Don’t get me wrong, the food was good, but not £20 a head good and took incredibly long to arrive at our table.
Our total bill for Brunch at CRAFT Burger Oxford for two of us? Just £23. Maybe it’s because they don’t have to pay higher rent and other rates because they are located in Headington, just out of Oxford. What I like to think is that they aren’t quite so profit driven and because they are independently run, they are fuelled by a passion for good food and service. I get the impression CRAFT Burger Oxford want to give something good to the community of Headington.
Conclusion and final thoughts
If you want to go somewhere in Oxfordshire for a great brunch that won’t cost you a fortune, I’d choose this place any day and will go as far as saying that it’s my favourite place to have breakfast or brunch in Oxford or Oxfordshire at the moment of writing this article in April 2018. I would rate my experience here a 9.5/10 – there was really nothing I could fault with the food or service.
Assuming you haven’t tried this place already, I would definitely recommend popping by CRAFT Burger Oxford at some point!
